The Doggfather is the definition of “legend”, his speech for “I Am Hip-Hop” honor showed us how real Snoop Dogg really is.
During the 2016 BET Hip-Hop Awards, his introduction and tribute was given by Compton native Kendrick Lamar.
“Through his examples, we discovered our own trans-formative abilities to make a mark on our art,” Kendrick said in recognition of Snoop. “No other rappers can simultaneously give you records like ‘Murder Was The Case,’ and at the same time, make every beautiful woman, drop it like it’s hot. Snoop Dogg was the guy and he continue to be.”
Snoop began his acceptance speech explaining that he never aimed to be where he is now, he just wanted to make some dope music. Truthfully, that’s where it has to start; aim to make dope music first and the rest will follow if the stars align and clearly they did for Snoop.
Interestingly the majority of Snoop’s speech was aimed at the generational divide in hip hop — the music, not the rapper — and reassured the young rappers they’ll be fine. Peep his speech below.
After his thankful filled speech, fans wondered what Snoop meant by slamming “old bitter rappers…”, who do you think Snoop was speaking about?
Congratulations to a true legend in hip hop!
